If you are looking for an antioxidant, vitamin-rich, delicious snack, the plum just might be the perfect choice!

Plums are packed with plant compounds that have antioxidant properties, which means they help prevent oxygen from reacting with other chemicals and causing damage to cells and tissues. They are especially rich in anthocyanins, the compounds also responsible for the plum’s dark-coloured skin.

Plums are especially rich in a polyphenol called chlorogenic acid, which appears to help balance blood sugar and regulate appetite.

“Plums are chock full of fiber, which helps slow down a blood sugar spike after you eat carbs. They can also boost your body’s production of adiponectin, a hormone that helps regulate your blood sugar levels. “

Plums come in many colors including red, purple, green, and yellow. There are over 2,000 plum varieties worldwide, there are many different flavors and peculiarities that popular fruit brings with it.  In the UK, National Plum Day in 2023 is August 24th. Dried plums are known as prunes.

In the orchard there are at least three varieties – Santa Rosa, Burgundy, and Cherry.
